PWGG Tale of an Army Painter Challenge

I’ve been motivated to start this event which is loosely based on GWs ‘Tale of Four Gamers’ and in part on Legio Malaysia’s current 2013 event “Legio Army Throwdown”. (props to Jeff Brooks and all the awesome officers at Legio Malaysia!)
Basically this is going to be a long term event that combines aspects of army construction and painting into an event specially designed to motivate you to complete a new army project.

Here’s what you have to do to take part:
1. Sign up on the PWGG Page stating your name and Army you will be constructing.
https://www.facebook.com/groups/248375055178944/#!/events/522072201170259/?context=create

2. Make a legal army list of up to 2000 points. Both Warhammer 40K and Warhammer Fantasy Armies will be valid choices for this Challenge. Special Characters are allowed and encouraged.

3. Now the catch is that you have to start with an army that is not more than 25% completed. i.e. you cannot begin with a completed army, this has to be a new army. 25% completed means that you can start with an army that has been assembled and base coated but not more than 25% painted. If you are unsure, post a pic of your models and I’ll make a decision on whether it can qualify for the Challenge. A scoring board will be put up at The Outpost to record attendance and scores

4. Over a series of weekends, participants will take part in an ‘Army Presentation Challenge’ aka ‘Throwdown’ where they will display completed units from their army list. The proposed schedule for the Challenge will be as follows:

* April 5th - Troops / Core
* April 19th – Elites / Special
* May 3rd – HQ / Lord and Heroes
* May 17th – Troops / Core
* May 31st - Heavy Support / Rare
* June 14th - Fast Attack / Core, Special or Rare
* June 28th - Wild Card (any previously undisplayed choice from your army)
* July 12th - Wild Card (any previously undisplayed choice from your army)

Participants will attend our Friday Hobby Nights at the Outpost and display their completed units for voting. Voting will be by your peers i.e. other participants. The unit that receives the most votes will be acknowledged on the scoring board. Additional scores will be given for attending the voting nights. (You’ll find out what the additional scores entitle you to later on in the rounds)

5. At the end of the final round of voting on July 12th, participants will display their entire completed army to vote for the “Best Challenge Army” award. The owner of the army that receives the most votes will receive the “Best Challenge Army” award and the bragging rights that go with it (if I’m feeling generous, I’ll throw in a challenge trophy). All other participants will received a participation badge on the scoring board.

I hope you guys are as excited as I am to participate in this. Remember that we will be organizing the Bellum Nex Crusade, a Warhammer 40K Apocalypse Battle on July 13th. This will be an ideal opportunity to prepare your army for that event. We will also be planning for a Warhammer Fantasy Legendary Battle soon after the Bellum Nex event.

So don’t delay, sign up now. Save up those ang pows and start planning your purchases. Thinking of starting a Warriors of Chaos army and adding some Dragon Ogres or that Slaughterbrute, well, this is the time! Like those new Dark Angels shinies? Well, what are you waiting for?

Finally, from the hobby-crazy gang at Penang War Gamers Group, I’d like to take this opportunity to wish all of you a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous Chinese Lunar New Year.

Gong Xi Fa Cai!

Cheers,
Patrick

Nicely done! Count me in as a remote competitor! Hmmm.... Orks, Avenging Sons, and Iron Warriors would realistically be the three possible choices...

Any suggestions folks? Smile

Kudos to you Patrick for organizing this event Smile.

I can't join coz I'm currently behind on my fist project Sad

Just a suggestion; I would recommend changing the Army Presentation to not have Troops choice followed by another Troops choice. We all know that for most armies, the troop choice will contain the most models. Separating them between ...say HQ or elites choice....or even have the second troop choice after the HQ AND elite choice would be more forgiving to hobbyist in terms of available painting time. Just my 2 cents. (just something we learned from our experience)

All the best to everyone who joins!!!!

Patrick that's some dead seksi advice he's passed along. We've already determined that our next Legio Army Throwdown in November will be Warhammer Fantasy with Core, General, Core, Special, Rare, Wild Card, Wild Card, Wild Card the order we're using. This allows the most possible time to paint up those Core choices by sandwiching a single model between them. x2 to Khairul's suggestion, esp. since you're battling a little bit of "2K is too much"

Rock on!

Hey Khairul,

Yea, my initial order was the one that Jeff stated. Will probably amend it to that, since you've experienced it firsthand.

Thanks a bunch for the sound advice. Smile

Better, because as Khairul mentioned, the troop choice need to get more time to present.
I feel that they learned a lot from the Legio Army Throwdown, as it is the first time is has been done in M'sia. So what ever advice from the gurus must be followed accordingly.

Count me in with my Dark Eldar!

I've got only some painted Dark Eldar, and the rest of it are unassembled/unpainted. I don't have my DE codex with me right now, but I can tell you that I got less than 25% painted since my DE army has a lot of models.

Thought this would be a good chance to make me finish them before K4.

Also, how would we go around doing this? We post up pictures of our completed squad?

Awesome! Thanks for the show of support Alvin.

For participants out of Penang, you can post up your photos of your 'before' and 'Army Presentation' in the thread I'll setup here or on our PWGG Facebook Event page.

Remember to post up your 2k army list over here or on the PWGG FB page as well.

@Beobot- You can participate. Just post up the pictures on the fb page as you go along. That's what we Penang folks are doing for the Legio Army Throwdown, which is happening in KL.
