| yes 6th ed is better and definitely more fun than 5th. Not much of a learning curve for past players and i believe slightly easier to learn for new players too. apart from the stagnation of the 40k story [which luckily we have BL to provide us with other interesting stories], i think it's a huge improvement from 5th ed.
gonna hit the '5whys' method on my take.
why i got bored of 5th ed 1. games was too linear; move, shoot, assault 2. missions was blergh; little to no considerations 3. almost the same role for every unit you had; apart from scoring troops 4. most of the game-winning decisions happen when making an army list, not on the table 5. skyrim, swtor and diablo 3 came out in succession
and here's how i think 6th ed made it better [according to my 5whys] 1. damn i wished 6th ed had a new phase like fantasy's magic. as much the game is still linear, changes on various rules made it more exciting and eventful. movement now matters because casualties depends on where you put your models. i like this change the most. it makes more sense and adds a lot of tactical value for such a simple change.
shooting phase got some nice changes too, apart from more reasonable cover saves i just find overwatch shooting very fun and eventful. its like you get an extra shooting phase and more importantly more time on your models to do stuffs then the normal 'shoot 5 times in 1 game' back in 5th ed.
challenges brought the epic-ness of fantasy to 40k assaults. i find that heroes now are given a better 'game-time or screen-time' because one vs one fights are always awesome and usually the most memorable. no more hiding heroes at the back as it should be.
2. so far ive only played 2 different missions and only read the rest. i must say its the biggest change, 6 missions with various 'plot-twist' is awesome. tho i cant help but think they copied a lot from FoW. the missions i played was exciting as much as it was rewarding. the re-introduction of key VPs [like 1st kill, extra VP for every Heavy unit killed, etc] and objectives that have their own number of VP made the game more meaningful. in 5th ed ive rarely given objectives any considerations, all i know is by the end game i should be there or be there from start to end. now with objectives having different value, every turn is a consideration on which would be more better, that one 4VP objective or 1 3VP and 1 2VP objectives.
it's nice that objectives games are no longer the same like in 5th; 2 objectives or D3+2. more variations equates to Good times !!
3. this is a bit of a letdown but one i did not expect to be changed. due to the 'technology' of 40k, most units can perform similar roles. SM, scouts, devastator, Landspeeder, etc all can perform a similar role. all of them can move, shoot for long, and has the capability to achieve the same end. my bit with this is maybe because i favour the FoW system where not many units can perform various roles in any given battle. i would have liked to see where normal marines and scouts could not take down vehicles but devastators can; which would promote more variance in an army.
a quick example is my GK army, i just need to bring psycannons and im all set for anything while in FoW i have to bring at least 4 types of unit with different roles to be at least competent. just like SM having ML/LC or daemon lords which is an answer to anything. this 'lack' of variation in roles is why i still prefer fantasy over 40k, my knights are for melee; they cant shoot, my halberds are for human-shield, my cannons are for firing; they cant move, my wizard is to cast spells only, etc. for me different roles in units brings a more depth gaming-wise.
4. this is a fun bit, in 5th ed usually when i deploy my pallies i feel very confident. apart from that 1 game which i lost to dann and the close one with alvin's DE, my draigowing was awesome-sauce and broken beyond all means. im not ashamed to admit it hell i actually felt good about it. this is primarily because of GWs business model of making any new codex more OP then others; usually that is. but in the 2 games i played it was quite close. i didnt feel as confident as in 5th ed which is all the better because now im more invested in the game rather than during making my list.
this is mainly due to the various new VPs in missions, in 5th ed i never bothered if i got the 1st kill nor not, now im deciding which is the softest target my opponent has, which VP can i attain and coming up with a plan during game play instead of my norm: pally squad awesome-sauce 1 will sit and hold on 1 objective, congo-line if possible and pally squad awesome-sauce 2 will drag draigo to oppoenents objectives; i dont think more than that really. good thing 6th ed changed that.
5. cant blame me for being a gamer since i was in school playing my first game ever: FALLOUT !!
there is however 1 rule which i am totally againts, like GK pure hatred: ALLIES. i understand why GW made it possible and why it is awesome, but i think it needs just a tad more restrictions. Eldar farseers please stop whoring yourself out to every single army out there lol.
so thats my take, it's all good at the moment. whats yours?

| you posted this at 2.44 am bro? as to your 5 whys... 1. Agree with your statement. But I prefer that they didn't include a magic phase, it'll be too similar to fantasy. 2. New missions breathe new life to the game, nuff said. 3. Looking at the missions, I'm expecting armies with more scoring troops rather than vehicle-spam/death stars/min-max. I'm not saying that the latter will disappear though. And by the way, since 40k is futuristic science fiction, multi-tasking is expected (although making the units a bit less multipurpose would be better). 4. Game winning decision will come from a combination of army list & generalship. The huge change I might say, are the facts that only one unit can claim/contest objectives, and the types of units that can claim/contest objectives. No more conga-line and blob shenanigans; good riddance. 5. Thank God I'm not affected. | |

| I've only played 3 games so far, and I like it a lot!!! It's really refreshing and the game is way more tactical than before. You'd be less rewarded for uber-units and more rewarded for good tactics. I'm playing with my Eldar Rangers for now. Will try out IG soon | |

| Love the game as usual. I can adapt to the changes of 6th, just that I'm too lazy to build and paint up new Blood Angels for now, hence Dark Eldar.
Also, the one thing that weirds me out the most is when infantry cannot assault once they disembark from a stationary Rhino.
Now the game is more "3D" in the sense that flyers are the latest dimension in the game.

Yup it's weird.. but understandable lah since Rhino can now move up to 18 in a single turn (BA ones 24!! )

| Coz it takes time for bulky marines to come out of a vehicle(be it stationary) | |

| Easy... marines can't assault from a vehicle because they store their chainswords on the roof outside of their Rhinos. Codex Astartes says so. Don't want to accidentally poke an eye out while rolling around inside a Rhino on rough terrain. | |

| actually with the current size of the rhino.. 6 marine only.. if the want to go with actual size a rhino would be the size of a land raider.
@ Thijiri- where did it ever say that they keep their chain sword outside.. that something new.

| Think about it: when a transport is blown up, the occupants can only shoot, not assault. Once the turn ends and the dead transport stops burning, the formerly-embarked squad picks their CCWs up and proceeds to smash faces in. So the CCWs must be stored on the outside of the transports! | |

| Funny thing about the whole "cant assault" thing is that once a rhino is inside the enemy line, opponent has to think twice wether to shoot it or not.
Dont shoot --> passengers cannot assault next turn. But a lot of things can happen. shoot (destroyed) --> passengers can assault next turn.
choose.. choose.. | |

| good la.. dont shoot at the rhino.. wait till someone shoots and blow it up then charge. HAHAHA.. like that no one wants to shoot the rhino.. they will wait for the passenger to disembark then shoot. | |
