| Hi friends of WGM
I have always wanted to make a wargaming convention (of sorts) as part of my bucket list.
I was wondering if anyone want to help join a steering committee on planning and executing a well organized wargaming convention. I got some ideas which I want to share and see what you guys think.
ideas
- promote the wargaming culture to the open public via display of various wargaming titles thru demo games, and talks. The event would not just be about one specific title but a display of all kinds of wargames even the cool but obscure ones like Napoleonics, De Bellis Antiquitatis, infinity, mig alley etc. The idea is to create awareness of the types of games out there, and bring it more to the open public.
- invite store owners to take part as part of the promotional event. I am thinking of a pitch idea for each store to choose a game system they would like to promote. On the event day the store owners will be responsible for setting up demos of that particular war game they would like to show off. In return they will be given an area to sell their stuff during the event duration (stores can sell anything and not locked to just one game system. If everyone wants to sell the same thing they can, maybe put a bargain or deals auctions etc to bring some good prices to the attendees and public)
- Malaysian Wargaming Championship Circuit. Will create a tournament for selected game systems base on the number of interested users. Basically I am thinking to create the preliminaries at store level and the top two of the table moves up into a world cup style knock out. Will need groups of tournament managers for the various game systems to manage the game systems we want to have for the event. With the max of 4 systems, 2 for each day.
example day 1 - 40k finals, Warmachine finals day 2 - Flames of war finals, fantasy finals
- Painting competitions, Painting clinics, Have the most hardcore award for the participate that plays each demo game available and qualifies for 2 Championship tournaments.
what do ya think? do share and tell if this is possible or not.

| 1.) errr... friendly pickup game/match between store? so player frm different area can mingle? maybe?
2.) Aggressive update on the event via every social media(progress, who's participating, news, get folks to "share" or "like" the event on FB, etc etc) to keep the steam on, and increase awareness
3.) Beautifully built terrain that fits the theme of game system
4.) Folks that promoting a specific game system meet up regularly (or before the event) to test-run their demo scenario, prepare visual aids for demo game (example : giant stand-up cardboard ork/SM standing on each side of table with their BS/WS/A/S/T printed on it), get folks from other system to test out their demo scenario and provide feedback
5.) Beautifully painted display battle scene diorama of each system with proper lighting for display (think: the FoW battle scene board on second floor of Legio)
6.) pamphlet that printed with *every* game shop's address/contact to distribute to public
but the thing is, our's are actually a very niche community, if tourney/painting comp/demo/etc etc all going on together, folks that playin tourney will not be able to help up with demo, vice versa. Especially when multiple system are promoting together at the same time.

| Good points there limp.
The tournament format needs some work what I stated is just a suggestion. Although we must remember its a convention first tournament second.
For the 40k tournament (since that will most likely be the largest entry) warmachine, on that day it self will be only the quarter finals > semi finals > finals stage. Qualifying for that top 16 spot will be before the event itself.

Good idea, the pre-qualify game can be spread to happen on different game-shop/club, get a representative from the con to follow up with current status of who's winning where, write some battle report with tons of pictures, update those on social media =) I like the direction of convention first tourney second, it could be like a mini exhibition too... the tough part is actually how to reach out to/attract folks that don't really aware of/new to miniature wargaming errr... folks, any idea? =)

| Yeap,
I want to organise the management of the convention it self. By suppling a platform for others to join/promote/ and share their products. So that there are stuff for everyone.
Example Gamers - painting competitions, tournaments, product promo sales (hopefully), hobby supplies airbrush suppliers
Everyone - paint clinics, demo tables, live demo with an emcee.
The biggest hurdle is actually getting the store/game clubs/suppliers to come on board.

| no date yet. Its still an idea. My plan for the next couple of weeks is to meet and talk with some key people a.e store owners, suppliers, people who have done stuff like this bfr. to get their blessing and also form a committee. Since its a convention first, tournament second. I need to get the key people onboard and then plan how we can promote the wargaming culture in the most simple way possible. Also to have something to pull current wargamers to the venue for them to get deals and bargains on various products from gaming material to hobby art material. Yes actually I was going to ask if i can meet up with u jeff lol. On the tourney side of things. The idea is to have the finals during the event not the whole tournament itself. I am thinking more like the stores/game groups will hold mini tournaments and the top 2 get a ticket to move up into a death match top 16 to get the winner. That way we only need 8 tables for one game sytem or if its a less popular game system have a top 8 which we will need 4 tables death match. Not to mention some store branding and pride for the winner and the store/game group it came from. Also I am thinking as part of the event promo I feel it would be good to send invites to other game stores in the region to come see who has the best wargamer in the region In terms of pulling a crowd and venue we might hit a snag but I am looking towards partnering with a mall or a college/uni first since i kinda feel a convention hall will be nice but I doubt for our first that would be a good venue. | |
